The Krowor Municipal Assembly (KroMA), has disbursed part of the District Assemblies Common Fund designated for Disability worth Gh100,005 to 69 persons living with disabilities (PLWDs) in the municipality.

Several items, cash for medical supports and cash gifts worth several thousand of cedis were donated to  persons living with disabilities (PLWDs) for their empowerment.

Items disbursed includes Chest deep freezers, Fufu pounding machines, oven gas and cylinders, tricycles among others.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Joshua Nii Bortey explained that, consistent allocation of funds for PLWDs and other interventions are clear testimonies of Government’s commitment to enhancing social image of PLWDs.

Indicating that, President Nana Addo led-administration still strongly holds the cardinal conviction that one of the means of minimizing poverty among all PLWDs and particularly those outside the formal sector of employment is to empower them with skills development and then with necessary tools to work.

Hence, will be able to develop a high sense of responsibility in terms of managing their own businesses, build their capacities to enable them advocate and assert their rights and offer quality services to the rest of society.

“We are seeing to the  development agents within the Municipality, to pursue this course in order that the desired results, we all crave for are met and sustained”, he asserted.

Meanwhile the MCE revealed that, the maiden ceremony for the disbursement of the disability fund initially targeted more at people living with disability; but due to the large number of applications received,  a total of sixty-nine has be taken care of so far.

Therefore indicated that, those whose application could not receive attention for the programme would certainly be taken care of in subsequent disbursements, stressing that “Disability Fund Management Committee (DFMC),  will continue to do their best to cater for the rest”.

“Though our streets are largely spared from the nuisance of alms begging by some PLWDs, we cannot guarantee that this development will remain so far as the Municipality grows rapidly” Hon. Bortey lamented.

He therefore tasked all stakeholders particularly the (DFMC) to work diligently, transparently to ensure judicious use of the Funds so that the canker of alms begging is completely nibbed in the bud.

The MCE also urged the committee to go the extra mile and develop new strategies that will better the lot of our brothers and sisters living with disabilities.

Noting that, his management and staff will be monitoring activities periodically to ensure that  operations are above board and in consonance with the guidelines of the National Council for persons living with disabilities (NDPD).
