Ghana will struggle to beat Nigeria in final 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier

Ex-Ghana international, Mohammed Polo is not confident the West African nation can overpower rivals, Nigeria for a slot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Ghana, four time African champions will engage the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the final 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers over two legs in March.

The first leg is set for the weekend of 24th-29th of next month at a yet to named venue as the Cape Coast Stadium is earmarked for the 6th March Independence celebration in Ghana.

Following a poor outing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, Mohammed Polo says the three time FIFA World Cup participants do not look prime to return to the mundial as the Nigeria hurdle looks extremely daunting.

“What is happening will not help us. “Even if we are able to qualify for the [FIFA] World Cup, it will not help us. “Because this is not the quality. To be frank football goes beyond logic.

“But you need a coach who can put certain things together so that if he is able to win then he can take us to the World Cup.

“But to be frank, the quality of our football today, if we are able to go past Nigeria and go to the World Cup, we shall thank God. “But the World Cup is also a different thing.” Mohammed Polo told Free fm.

The Black Stars of Ghana were bent on ending the 40-year wait for an AFCON trophy but exited the 33rd edition of the tournament with just a point.

Ghana were nailed 1-0 by North Africans, Morocco in their opening Group C game and subsequently lost a 1-0 lead to draw 1-1 against Gabon in the second at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.

The third group game ended in a 3-2 loss against tournament debutants, Comoros in Garoua to finish a worse campaign and first ever group stage exit since 2006.

Ghana has played FIFA World Cups in 2006 as its maiden appearance in Germany and followed concurrently with the 2010 and 2014 appearances in South Africa and Brazil.

Their best performances were a round 16 and a quarter final stage in the maiden edition and the second in 2010.

The 2014 edition was a poor spectacle to behold following a group stage exit after losses to the USA and Portugal in the first and third group games with a 2-2 draw to Germany in the second match.
