NHIA begins disbursement GH¢402million to health facilities nationwide

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says it has commenced the disbursement of an additional GH¢402 million to healthcare facilities across Ghana. 

This latest payments covers claims submitted and vetted for June and July 2024, bringing the NHIA in line with its agreed-upon three-month reimbursement schedule.

Of the total amount, public health facilities will receive the largest share, with GH¢223.9 million, representing 56.03% of the disbursement.

Private health facilities were allocated GH¢106.5 million, while quasi-public and mission health facilities also received significant funds.

This brings the NHIA’s total payments in recent months to GH¢800 million, underlining its commitment to supporting healthcare providers and ensuring the sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“The NHIA’s prompt claim payment reflects its commitment to improving timely payments and ensuring the continued provision of quality healthcare services to NHIS members. The NHIS’s generous Benefit Package addresses over 95 percent of disease conditions and includes more than 550 medications on the NHIS medicines list,” the statement said.

“The NHIA expresses gratitude to healthcare providers for their dedication and support in delivering quality healthcare services to Ghanaians.

“The institution is committed to engaging with stakeholders to address any concerns and work collaboratively towards a sustainable and efficient healthcare system”.

In recent months, the NHIA has made substantial payments to healthcare providers to clear outstanding claims. In August 2024, the Authority released GH¢151 million to settle claims from March and April 2024.

In July 2024, GH¢135.6 million was disbursed, covering claims up to February 2024. In April 2024, another GH¢170.8 million was released to settle claims for January and February.

This was preceded by a GH¢180 million payment in March 2024, covering claims up to December 2023. Earlier, in February 2024, GH¢130.2 million was paid to 4,850 healthcare providers for claims from October 2023.

The release signed by the Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system, ensuring prompt payments, and delivering quality healthcare services to NHIS subscribers.
