Veep commend Education Minister for organizing ‘NEW” to review educational performance

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumiaa has commended Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister for Education for instituted National Education Week (NEW), to review the sector performance.

“This is a huge gathering of all stakeholders in education to assess the performance of the sector. One of the qualities of strong institution is they conduct an impartial self- retrospection on their programmes and this is why I consider this gathering a vital one”.

This was made known on behalf of the Vice President, by the Senior advisor to the President, Hon. Yaw Osafo Marfo during the 2022 National Education Week which is an annual event of the Ministry of Education held in Accra.

“This forum is of great importance to the Government of Ghana (GoG), Development Partners (DPs), the NGO community, Civil Society and key stakeholders as it presents an opportunity”.

The theme for 2022 NEW is, “RE-ASSESSING EDUCATIONAL POLICIES FOR EFFECTIVE SERVICE DELIVERY AND NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION”.

Vice President Bawumia pointed out that, one of the hallmarks of strong institution is the ability to conduct a self- retrospection on the relevance of their policies, programmes and projects and being bold to recommend a revision of those policies, programmes and projects.

He averred that, Government’s investment in the education sector seeks to, deepen access and quality STEM Education across all levels in all regions; Roll out Communities of Excellence program across the country; Ensure that all children acquire Literacy and Numeracy skills at grade 4; Provide opportunity for out-of-school children to access basic education; Consolidation of free SHS to include free TVET.

Again, Equip Ghanaian Youth with 21st Century Skills to enhance their global competitiveness; Expand access to tertiary education in all regions; Improve learning outcomes across all levels and Expand access to teacher trainee education.

“The Government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo since January, 2017 has contributed significantly to the growth and development of human capital in the country through the huge investments made in education.

Since the onset of the Fourth Republic, this is the only government that has operationalised and delivered under the tenets of Article 38 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

The operationalization includes: the formulation of the Education Strategic Plan (2018- 2030), introduction of Free SHS, equitable provision of infrastructure at all levels and in all categories of education in all regions.

The rest are restoration of teacher trainee allowances, harmonization and prioritization of TVET education with the passage of the Pre- Tertiary Act, 2020 Act 1049, deepening inclusive, special and complementary education.

These investments have contributed to improving learning outcomes in the country”.

The Deputy Minister for Education, Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjor urged stakeholders within the education sector to delve deeper into the various Government policies, programmes and projects in order to help shape them to achieve the expected outcome.

“The 2022 NEW is witnessing the participation of approximately 300 officials drawn from the Ministry of Education, officials from our Agencies, GES regional directors, Regional planning officers and selected district directors, district planning officers, heads of schools and representatives from other Ministries.

As well as development Partners, Academia, Teacher Unions, NGOs, CSOs and the Private sector. In addition these, several others are joining via our online outlets including zoom and Facebook live”.

He therefore, entreated all and sundry to exercise their right of citizenship by being critical of the policies and programmes identified for discussion in the course of the week.
