Ghana comes nowhere near Nigeria in terms of quality players – Adu Tutu Skelley

Written by ...

Ghana has made three FIFA World Cup appearances, first in Germany 2006 before subsequently in South Africa 2010 and the third in 2014 in Brazil.

The maiden appearance could be described as impressive having finished at the round 16 stage.

There was an improved performance in their second entry, producing a quarter final result – losing on penalty shootouts against Uruguay.

The third was a debacle when they exited the tournament at the group stage with just a point after opening and third group game losses to the USA and Portugal.

In between the two defeats, they held European powerhouse Germany to a 2-2 draw in the second game, earning their only point.

Ghana missed out on qualification to the 2018 World Cup edition in Russia and would eye the 2022 tournament in Qatar later this year.

The four time African champions must however clear a difficult hurdle by beating West African rivals, Nigeria in the final qualifier in March.

The first leg of the clash comes up on March 24 at the Cape Coast Stadium with the reverse fixture in Nigeria three days later.

Ex-Ghana youth international, Skelley Adu Tutu says the Black Stars lack quality to go past Nigeria.

“When we talk about players, we are nowhere near the Nigeria. “From their number one to the bench and most of their players play in the top clubs in the European leagues.

“We cannot compare ourselves to them but if we do our things right in terms of preparation which we have to start now.

“We must know which players to blend with the local stars then we start to train and see other than that we can’t beat the Nigerians honesty.

“I want us to go to the World Cup but with these our players and the kind of attitude it looks as if there is nothing at stake.

“When they are on the pitch, discipline, dedication and all, you don’t see it in them.” Adu Tutu Skelly told Adikanfo fm of Berekum.

The Black Stars put up an ignominious performance which culminated in a group stage exit with a single point from three group stage games.

A 1-0 loss to one time AFCON winners, Morocco and a 1-1 draw against Gabon before a 3-2 loss to debutants Comoros, gave them just a point and a first step elimination for the first time since the 2006 edition in Egypt.

Ghana named ex-international, Otto Addo as head coach to be assisted by ex-Dutch midfielder George Boateng and ex-Ghana skipper, Stephen Appiah, former Kotoko coach, Mas Ud Didi Dramani as his assistants.

Irish coach of Ghanaian descent, Chris Hughton will bring his rich club coaching experience with Brighton, Newcastle United, Norwich and Birmingham City as Technical Advisor to Otto Addo.
