Accra, Ghana— Ghana Water Limited has commenced controlled spillage from the Weija Dam after water levels rose above the maximum safe operating threshold of 48 feet.

In a public statement, the company announced that all spill gates of the dam have been opened to release excess water and protect the structural integrity of the facility.

According to Ghana Water Ltd (GWL), the controlled spillage forms part of routine safety measures undertaken during the rainy season whenever water levels exceed 45 feet. The process is intended to reduce pressure on the dam and prevent any potential structural failure or disaster.

The company further disclosed that the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast additional torrential rainfall upstream, which is expected to increase water inflows into the dam.

As a result, GWL indicated that the spillage could continue for several months depending on rainfall intensity and inflow volumes.

Downstream Communities Advised to Evacuate Vulnerable Areas

Ghana Water Ltd has urged residents living along the downstream course of the river to immediately evacuate flood-prone and vulnerable areas in order to protect lives and property.

“Management has also been informed by the National Disaster Management Organisation and the various District Assemblies that plans are underway to clear structures and obstructions that hinder the free flow of water into the sea,” the statement said.

The company called on the relevant authorities to expedite those interventions to minimize the risk of severe flooding in affected communities.

GWL reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding critical water infrastructure while ensuring public safety, urging residents to cooperate fully with directives issued by emergency response agencies and local authorities.

Communities located in low-lying areas along the Weija River stretch have historically experienced flooding during dam spillage periods, making the latest advisory a significant warning for residents downstream as the rainy season intensifies.
