Accra, Ghana — 29 September 2026: The Local Government Service Council has expressed support for a proposal by the Chartered Institute of Local Governance and Development (CILGD) to strengthen professional development among staff of the Local Government Service through training, professional membership, research and consultancy.
The proposal was presented at the Fifth Meeting of the Sixth Local Government Service Council, held on 24 September 2026.
CILGD’s presentation sought the Council’s guidance and support for initiatives aimed at strengthening professional development and institutional capacity within the Local Government Service across Ghana.
Following the presentation, the Council provided guidance on the next steps and supported CILGD’s engagement with the Local Government Service on implementation arrangements.
The proposed initiative will provide opportunities for professional training, membership, research and consultancy, with the broader objective of promoting continuous professional development within the local governance system.
Council advises engagement with Public Services Commission
The Council further advised CILGD to engage the Public Services Commission (PSC) regarding the recognition of CILGD professional certificates as professional qualifications that could be considered for promotion at all levels of the Local Government Service.
Any recognition of the certificates for promotion will depend on the outcome of that engagement and the applicable processes and approvals of the Public Services Commission.
CILGD opens membership to public-sector professionals
CILGD membership is open to Local Government Service staff, members of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), GLOSAC members, and all public and civil servants.
Other professionals interested in local governance, public administration and development are also encouraged to enrol.
