Excitement is building in the Okere constituency following the official launch of the Okere Unity Community Football League. The community sports initiative is aimed at uniting towns and villages while educating the youth on pressing social issues.
The league was officially launched on Saturday, July 24, at Twum-Guaso in the Eastern Region, drawing traditional and religious leaders, youth groups, and residents from across the constituency. The tournament is scheduled to run from July to October 2026.
Agongo’s Commitment to Youth Development
Renowned Ghanaian business mogul and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has pledged to extend his support for the initiative beyond the Eastern Region.
Alhaji Agongo provided items including footballs, a trophy, goalkeepers gloves and shin pads for the launch through the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. He announced his commitment to do more for the league as it moves across various regions.
“This is about our young people. When we invest in sports at the community level, we invest in their future,” Alhaji Agongo said. “I have provided some items to get things started, but this is just the beginning. I intend to do more to support this initiative across the various regions after the Eastern Region.”
The philanthropist, known for his longstanding commitment to youth empowerment and community development, said the football festival presents a unique opportunity to engage young Ghanaians in productive activities while addressing challenges they face.
The support is the latest in a long line of charitable interventions by Alhaji Agongo, who has over the years supported education and healthcare across Ghana by building and renovating schools, paying school fees for underprivileged students, and settling medical bills for vulnerable patients.
Sports Initiative Receives High-Level Endorsement
The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who graced the occasion, commended the initiative, describing it as a model that ought to be replicated across the country.
Mr Ampofo-Ankrah stated that such sports initiatives deserve commendation and support because they bring communities together, create a platform for the dissemination of information, and provide a solid channel for social intervention, policy education, and awareness to communicate key strategic messages to communities.
“The President is totally committed to the transformation of sports infrastructure in Ghana, and initiatives like this at the community level complement that vision,” the NSA boss noted.
Tournament with a Purpose
The football league is designed not only as a sporting event but as a vehicle for social change. Organisers said the initiative would be used to educate the youth on HIV/AIDS prevention and the dangers of drug abuse, which remain pressing concerns in many communities.
The league is also expected to strengthen community bonds and foster a sense of unity among the various towns and villages within Okere.
Broad Community Participation
The launch ceremony at Twum-Guaso witnessed a colourful display of support, with traditional rulers and religious leaders lending their blessings to the initiative. Youth groups and residents from various communities across Okere turned out in large numbers to witness the event.
Looking Ahead
Organisers expressed optimism that the league would not only unearth football talents in the district but also serve as a catalyst for community development and youth engagement. The tournament, they said, would provide a platform for engaging the youth on critical national issues while fostering unity and social cohesion.
Alhaji Agongo’s pledge to expand support beyond the Eastern Region has further raised hopes that the initiative will grow into a national movement for youth development through sports.
As the league kicks off, all eyes will be on Okere to see whether this community-driven initiative can deliver on its promise of transforming lives and fostering unity among the youth.
