The Alliance for WASH Advocacy (A4WA) has sounded the alarm on Ghana’s sanitation crisis, highlighting the need for urgent action to address millions of Ghanaians’ lack of access to adequate sanitation facilities.

As the world marks World Toilet Day 2024 under the theme “Living with Dignity: Advancing Inclusive Sanitation for All,” A4WA emphasizes that sanitation is a fundamental human right, essential for maintaining dignity, health, and well-being.

However, in Ghana, millions still lack access to safe and sustainable sanitation facilities, resulting in increased health risks, environmental challenges, and social inequalities. The situation is particularly dire in rural areas, where access to sanitation facilities is limited, and open defecation is widespread.

A4WA is calling on the government, development partners, and stakeholders to prioritize investment in sanitation infrastructure and promote policies that address the needs of marginalized groups. The organization believes that achieving universal access to toilets is essential to improving public health, reducing poverty, and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6.

“Sanitation is not just a matter of infrastructure; it’s also a matter of dignity and human rights,” said a spokesperson for A4WA. “We urge the government and stakeholders to take immediate action to address the sanitation crisis in Ghana and ensure that every Ghanaian has access to safe and sustainable sanitation facilities.”

A4WA reaffirms its commitment to advocating for improved sanitation systems, fostering partnerships, and empowering communities with the knowledge and tools to maintain safe hygiene practices. The organization calls on all stakeholders to join forces to address the sanitation crisis in Ghana and ensure that no one is left behind.
