The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has urged the government to continue to improve the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) rather than scrapping it entirely.
According to IEAG, ICUMS has achieved significant milestones in streamlining Ghana’s customs operations and boosting trade facilitation despite challenges raised by stakeholders.
Some of the benefits of ICUMS include streamlined customs processes, enhanced revenue mobilization, improved trade facilitation, alignment with international standards, and job creation and capacity building.
However, IEAG acknowledges concerns surrounding the implementation of the Unique Consignment Reference (UCR) and proposes recommendations to address these challenges.
These recommendations include enhancing stakeholder engagement, investing in capacity building, and leveraging technology for automation.
They said, “We believe that with continuous improvement and investment, ICUMS can continue to deliver on its promise of transforming trade facilitation in Ghana.”
The association is calling for a constructive approach to addressing the challenges facing ICUMS, rather than discarding the system entirely.
