Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly launches Green Ghana Day

As part of the drive to go green across the country, the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly has demonstrated its commitment in participating in the national exercise of planting five million trees across the country.

Speaking at the Green Ghana Day launch in Accra, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Aminu Mohammed Zakaria called on the citizenry to observe the Green Ghana Day as an opportunity to secure the future of the country as trees remain vital to humanity’s survival.

“Government have directed that a day be set aside for the planting of 5 million trees across the length and breadth of the country”, he said and explained that the exercise is also intended to aid the conservation of the country’s forest stretch and ecology.

He said government have engaged the citizenry not to sit by and watch the trees, flora and fauna from being wiped out.

This he pointed out that the country’s existence is tied directly to the survival of trees, adding that it is critical that trees planted as part of the exercise are properly cared for and well nurtured.

The MCE however called on everyone in the municipality to contribute their quota by watering and monitoring the trees to serve the purpose for which they were planted.

“Quantities of tree seedlings have been distributed to all the 16 regions of the country which includes different species to suit the various needs of the communities and varying conditions under which the trees will be planted”, he said, and urged the public to plant the seedlings.

Mr. Aminu Mohammed Zakari said the Agricultural department for the Assembly have the technical know how and resources necessary to make the tree planting campaign a success and therefore called on everyone to contact the department for support to enable the exercise achieve its goals and objectives.

He however appealed to the citizenry particularly inhabitants of Ayawaso North to demarcate areas of beautification and direct all to contact the department for seedlings and technical advice.

The United Nations (UN) 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP21) created the platform for humanity to do more on forest climate deforestation and also drive the efforts for reforestation and restoring 350 million hectares of degraded land with trees by 2030 in reducing deforestation rates by half in the next 15 years which will help keep global temperatures under 20o C increase.

In a related development, the MCE, Municipal Coordinating Director, President of Ayawaso Council of Zongo Chiefs, Agricultural Director of the Assembly and Assembly members took turns to plant trees at the Mamobi General hospital.
